PC COMPATIBILITY GUIDE

How to match a CPU and motherboard

A processor does not work with every motherboard. The socket must match, the chipset must support the CPU generation, the BIOS must recognize the processor, and the board must use the memory type you plan to install.

Check CPU compatibility in PCNavo →

1. Match the CPU socket

Start with the socket shown in the processor specification. Examples include AMD AM4 and AM5, plus Intel LGA1200, LGA1700 and LGA1851. A processor cannot be installed in a different socket even if the product names look similar.

2. Check chipset and CPU generation support

The correct socket is necessary, but it is not always enough. A motherboard chipset may support only selected processor generations. Check the motherboard manufacturer's CPU support list for the exact processor model.

3. Confirm the BIOS version

Some older motherboards need a BIOS update before they can start with a newer compatible CPU. If the board does not offer BIOS flashback without a processor, ask the retailer which BIOS version is installed.

4. Match DDR4 or DDR5 memory

Motherboards support a specific memory generation. DDR4 modules do not fit DDR5 slots. Some Intel CPU generations can work with either type, but the exact motherboard still supports only the type listed in its specification.

5. Check power delivery and size

A compatible entry-level board may run a high-power processor but still be a poor match for sustained heavy workloads. Also confirm that an ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX board fits the selected case.

Quick compatibility checklist

  • Same CPU and motherboard socket
  • Exact CPU listed by the motherboard manufacturer
  • Required BIOS version installed
  • Matching DDR4 or DDR5 memory
  • Motherboard size supported by the case
